Having recently browsed the Vancouver Archives in search of older city plans, I was pleased to find just how early the bicycle was a popular form of transportation. Although the city soon began planning for the automobile like others of its contemporaries, Major James Skitt Matthews observed how the numbers of bicycles prompted the city to put up racks and even create bicycle paths in the early 1900s. (see 15th of July: http://vancouver.ca/ctyclerk/archives/digitized/EarlyVan/index.htm)

While it is important to use tools such as this one to network ideas with people who have similar research interests, mine are closely related to themes found in post-structuralist theory and social construction, it is also important to remember that even as students we are much more than our intellectual pursuits. This is one of the reasons I’ve chosen to do my thesis research on a topic that allows me to apply my favourite bodies of theory to a case study in the infrastructure necessary to support cycle-commuting. I do wish that the activity itself was a more productive research tool, but alas.

Please feel free to comment here with resources for engaging with Vancouver’s cycling community. While I am already well aware of groups like the VACC, Pedal, City Council, the Bicycle Advisory Committee and Translink, it would be useful to know more about other community groups and any actions they take to secure better resources for commuters.
